We will take further precautions as necessary to help keep our buses and facilities clean and our staff and riders safe.

Due to the current Stay-at-Home Order in effect for Ontario, all YRT travellers are reminded to limit travel for essential purposes only. If you need to travel for essential reasons, please follow all COVID-19 safety measures.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, return home and self-isolate immediately. Seek assessment at a COVID-19 Assessment Centre. Please visit  york.ca/covid19  for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Face masks/coverings

Should transit travellers wear non-medical face masks and coverings?

Yes. It is mandatory to wear a non-medical face mask or covering on public transit and at transit facilities. YRT travellers not wearing a face mask or covering, or not wearing one properly, may be subject to a fine.

Please visit our Non-Medical Face Masks and Coverings page for more information and FAQs.

Safety measures

I received the COVID-19 vaccine. Do I still need to wear a mask and follow all public health measures on public transit?

Yes, you must continue to follow all public health measures even after getting vaccinated: practice physical distancing, wear a face mask or covering, practice good hand hygiene and stay home if you are unwell.

To stay informed of the latest updates from Public Health and for more information, visit York Region’s COVID-19 page.

How often is YRT cleaning their buses and facilities?

Visit our Cleaning and Disinfection Measures page for more information.

What other precautions is YRT taking to keep everyone safe?

In addition to increasing the frequency of the cleaning and disinfection of our buses and facilities, we’ve implemented various safety measures, including:

  • Mandatory non-medical face mask or covering for all travellers that are able while on public transit or at transit facilities
  • Front-door boarding and requiring travellers to exit the middle/rear doors to create a one-way flow
  • Barrier shields being installed on all buses to provide protection between passengers and drivers
  • Face masks, sanitizers and other personal protective equipment provided to all drivers and front-line staff

In addition to these measures, customers are strongly encouraged to use contactless forms of payment, including PRESTO and the Pay app, practice physical distancing and travel during off-peak times whenever possible, exercise good hand hygiene and staying home when sick.

We are closely monitoring updates from York Region Public Health, and will take further precautions as necessary.

Should I avoid using public transit?

All YRT travellers are reminded to limit travel for essential purposes only. For customers travelling for essential reasons, please continue to follow all COVID-19 safety protocols, including:

  • Wear a non-medical face mask or covering on public transit and at transit facilities
  • Keep a 2-metre distance from others, wherever possible
  • Consider travelling during off-peak times
  • Use contactless forms of payment, including PRESTO and the Pay app
  • Board all buses at the front and exit through the middle or rear doors only
  • Wash your hands often. Carry hand sanitizer with you while you travel
  • Avoid touching your face, mouth, nose or eyes with unwashed hands
  • Stay home if you are sick

In addition, we have increased our efforts in addition to our regular cleaning protocol by cleaning our buses and facilities more frequently and disinfecting high-touch surfaces to help with the protection of our drivers, staff and passengers.

We will continue to monitor updates from Public Health and will take further precautions as necessary.

What can I do as a public transit rider to keep myself and others protected?

How will drivers stay protected when front-door boarding resumes on July 2?

We’re working on installing barriers in the driver’s area to help with physical distancing, and protect drivers and passengers. As we work to install these barriers on all of our buses, drivers in the meantime will be provided with face shields to help keep themselves and others protected.

Please note: Drivers are not required to wear a face mask or shield when behind the driver barrier.

Is YRT installing sanitizer stations or distributing sanitizers at terminals or on buses?

Currently, there are no plans to install sanitizer stations or distribute sanitizers; however, we are monitoring updates from York Region Public Health and will take further precautions as necessary.

Our buses, terminals and rapidway stations are cleaned and disinfected on a daily basis. We also encourage you to carry your own personal disinfectant, such as hand sanitizer or wipes, and wash your hands often. You can read more tips on how to keep yourself protected here: york.ca/covid19
