Beginning Monday, January 4 until Tuesday, February 10, 2021, all York Region Transit 400-series High School Special routes will be suspended. In addition, various trips making connections to select high schools in York Region will be suspended. Visit our news page for more information.
YRT is here to help you prepare for back to school. Here are some things you need to know before travelling with us, including health and safety tips.
Plan your Trip
YRT services many York Region high schools and post-secondary schools. Our schedules provide frequent travel to/from schools during peak times that students will need to travel, such as morning and afternoon rush hours.

YRT vs. Viva
YRT and Viva are part of the same system.
Viva is our rapid transit service that operates on a proof-of-payment system. Viva operates along major roads in York Region and services only major intersections, to allow for quicker travel.
There are no fare boxes on Viva buses so you must tap your PRESTO card or activate your mobile fare (Pay app) before boarding. Viva stops are called “vivastations.” Each one has a PRESTO card reader and ticket vending machine so you can pay your fare before boarding. If you travel on Viva without proper proof-of-payment, you may be subject to a fine or criminal charge. Visit our Proof of Payment and Transfers page to learn more.
Arrive at your stop 5 minutes early
It is important to arrive at your stop at least 5 minutes before the scheduled arrival time to ensure you meet your bus.

Paying your Fare
Youth fares
If you are between the ages of 13 to 19, and in full-time attendance at a high school, you are eligible for YRT Youth fares. Visit our Fare Chart for details.
Have your student I.D. card ready when you pay your fare. We understand that it takes some time for grade 9 students to be issued an I.D. card. Drivers will allow them to board during this transition period.
Pay using PRESTO or the YRT Pay app
You can pay your fare using PRESTO or the YRT Pay app. These methods allow for contactless payment and the use of discounted Youth fares.
