YRT facilities are designed, built and maintained to enhance the use of public transit for our customers and York Region residents. Our facilities are designed to meet Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements.

With the implementation of dedicated bus lanes comes newly designed transit shelters that offer not only protection from the elements, but upgraded and enhanced security features and fare payment devices. Facilities are inspected on a regular basis to ensure a clean and safe environment is maintained.

Bus Stops

There are over 5,050 bus stops across York Region.

All YRT stops are clearly marked with a bus stop sign that includes a bus stop number and our Customer Service contact information.

Bus stops that are more frequently used will have street furniture. YRT street furniture includes the following amenities: transit shelters, benches, bike racks, waste/recycling receptacles, multi-publication units, newspaper box organizers, information display cases and community information kiosks.

YRT Coordinated Street Furniture Program

York Region is currently implementing the Coordinated Street Furniture Program at YRT on-street facilities which will include some of the following amenities:

  • Bus shelter and bench
  • Transit shelters
  • Benches
  • Bike racks
  • Waste and recycling receptacles
  • Multi-publication units
  • Information display cases
  • Community information kiosks

The Coordinated Street Furniture Program presents YRT and the area municipalities with the opportunity to promote an identifiable service across the Region. This is achieved by a unified and cohesive Regional image while making 'places' within the public realm. It also supports a number of Regional policies through promoting a transit-supportive public realm, well-designed and accessible public places and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes.

Rapidways

Rapidways are dedicated lanes in the centre of the road for Viva vehicles only. In response to emergencies, police, fire and ambulance vehicles are permitted to use the rapidways and cross the median at designated intervals. Stations are placed every kilometre or so, with passenger access located at signalized intersections. Rapidways allow Viva vehicles to zip past congested traffic.

VivaNext

VivaNext is the next generation of rapid transit in York Region. VivaNext plans for a modern, rapid transit system including more rapidways, subway service and mixed-use transit/pedestrian-friendly centres.

Visit vivaNext's website for the latest developments, construction updates and more.

Vivastations

Vivastations are modern and safe. Every vivastation has fare vending machines and PRESTO card readers that allow you to purchase your fare before boarding. Information on Viva routes are provided at the station, which offers a quick means of determining the best route to take to get you to your destination.

Vivastations have variable message signs (VMS) indicating when the next vehicle will arrive in real-time. Every location is individually assessed for adequate night-time lighting for safety and security. Additionally, stations are inspected and monitored regularly ensuring damage or deficiencies are identified and rectified as soon as possible.
