Getting you to your destination safely is our priority; however, it’s important to remember that pedestrians and cyclists are the most vulnerable travellers on our roads. Please take extra care when walking or cycling to or from your bus stop.
York Region wants transit riders to get to their bus stop safely
Here’s some tips:
- Give yourself lots of time to get to your bus stop
- Don’t run to catch a bus. Wait for the next one
- Only cross at intersections or crosswalks when walking to a bus stop
- Don’t get dropped off from a vehicle in a live lane of traffic or a bus loop when catching a bus
- Only get out of the vehicle at the curb on the side of the road when you are exiting a vehicle at a bus stop
- It is safest to wait for the next bus instead of racing to catch a bus. Wait for the next one
Road safety
- Always cross at designated crosswalks or intersections
- Avoid distractions such as phones and music
- Make eye contact with motorists when crossing the street
- Always push the pedestrian walk signal button to ensure you have enough crossing time; only cross when the walk signal is displayed
- Dress with your safety in mind; wear clothes and accessories that allow you to see and hear your surroundings clearly
On bus safety
- Board at the front doors and exit at the rear doors of the bus; take turns with other passengers
- If you’re standing, be sure to hang onto a seat or pole for your safety, and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before walking to the exit
- Everyone is welcome on York Region Transit. Please be respectful and courteous towards other passengers and the driver
Travelling when it’s dark
- Wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself visible to motorists
- Help us see you when you are waiting for your bus by making yourself visible and standing near the curb or inside the shelter when the bus approaches
Request stop after 9 p.m.
If you ride YRT after 9 p.m., you can exit between stops, closer to your destination. Let your bus driver know where you wish to get off at least one stop ahead. To meet your request, your driver must be able to stop safely. For added safety and security, please exit at the front doors (request stop not available on Viva).
See something, say something. Report a disturbance by speaking up, alerting the driver or enforcement officer and if it is a true emergency, call 911.
