YRT makes it easy for you to commute with your bike and take the bus to get to your destination. You pay your regular fare but your bike rides for free.

Experience the ease and convenience of travelling with a bike on YRT. Each rack holds up to two bikes and is designed for easy loading and unloading.

Why should I bike ‘n’ bus?

  • Make a positive impact on your environment and reduce your carbon footprint
  • Biking is a completely clean form of transportation. The only fuel it burns is your own calories!
  • A leisurely bike ride can elevate levels of feel-good endorphins, boosting your mood

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the rack is full?

Bike racks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If there is no space left on the rack, the bus operator may let you bring your bike on board the bus unless:

  • You are travelling during rush hours (6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday)

  • The bus is full and there is not enough space

  • There is an emergency

  • Your bike is motorized

Will all buses have bike racks?

Yes, the entire YRT fleet has bike racks installed. You can also lock up your bike at one of over 410 YRT bike racks at more than 100 locations across York Region. Each rack has room for two bikes.

Will my bike fit on the rack?

The on-bus bike racks are designed to hold conventional two-wheel bicycles with wheels that are 20 to 29 inches in diameter, a wheelbase maximum of 44 inches, and a tire width maximum of 2 1/8 inches or 54 millimetres.

What isn’t allowed on the bike rack?

  • Any bike with more than two wheels

  • Any bike with wheels that do not meet the guidelines (see above)

  • Any motorized bike or vehicle (i.e., gas powered)

  • Any bike with extra equipment that impedes the bike from being mounted securely on the rack

  • Conventional style electric bikes (e-bikes) meeting the following criteria are permitted:

    • Electric/pedal power only
    • Wheels are 20 to 29 inches in diameter
    • Weighs less than 55 pounds
    • Abides by current bike policy and procedures

What if I forget to unload my bike from the bike rack?

Contact the YRT Contact Centre at 1-866-668-3978, available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays or by email at transitinfo@york.ca. Live chat is also available by clicking here.

Are electric scooters (e-scooters) and electric bikes (e-bikes) allowed on board the bus?

E-scooters and e-bikes are allowed on board the bus provided they do not block the aisleway or impact passenger safety. You may place an e-scooter or e-bike in the Priority and Courtesy Seating area if not in use. Note that you may be requested to vacate the seat for a person with a disability or at the request of the bus operator.

Please turn the power off and hold onto your e-scooter/e-bike during travel.An e-scooter is a vehicle that has:

  • Two wheels (one at the front and one at the back)

  • A platform to stand on (no seat, pedals or basket)

  • A handlebar for steering

  • An electric motor that does not exceed 500 watts

  • A maximum speed of 24 km/h on a level surface

  • Is typically foldable and comes in different styles, weights and speed capabilities

As part of the Ontario E-scooter Pilot Program in York Region, e-scooter travellers may use the Regional network of cycle tracks and on-street bike lanes.

Are motorized (gas-powered) scooters and bikes allowed on board the bus or the bike rack?

No. No motorized (gas-powered) scooter, bike or vehicle is allowed on board the bus or the bike racks, at any time.

Are foldable bikes allowed on board the bus?

If there is no space left on the exterior bike rack, the bus operator may let you bring your bike (foldable or not foldable) on board the bus unless:

  • You are travelling during rush hours (6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday)

  • The bus is full and there is not enough space

  • There is an emergency

  • Your bike is motorized
