Fare Media Policies

Single-ride fare

  • A single-ride fare is valid for travel on all YRT routes including TTC and Brampton Transit bus routes operating in York Region. A single-ride fare is valid for 120 minutes (two hours)
  • Fares can be purchased using a PRESTO card, credit or debit card, PRESTO in Mobile Wallet, PRESTO E-Tickets or cash fare
  • Customers using a PRESTO card or credit or debit card are not provided paper transfers, as transfers are written on the card and mobile device
  • All mobile tickets (purchased through the PRESTO E-Tickets app) must be activated before boarding the bus. Fare activation takes one full minute. When customers show their mobile ticket to the operator, they must also tap their ticket screen to show that the fare is valid

For travel on Viva

  • Viva operates on a pre-paid, proof-of-payment system. There are no fare boxes on Viva so you must purchase a ticket, tap your PRESTO, credit or debit card on the PRESTO machine, or activate your mobile ticket or pass at the vivastation or terminal before boarding
  • Mobile tickets (purchased through the PRESTO E-Tickets app) are valid for travel on Viva routes after they have been activated. Fare activation takes one full minute and must be completed before boarding the bus. Activated mobile tickets are valid for 120 minutes (two hours) from the date and time of activation

For travel on TTC in York Region

  • TTC-contracted routes operating in York Region include: TTC Routes 17A, 68B, 102D, 129A and 160; customers must pay YRT fare on these TTC routes when travelling north of Steeles Avenue
  • Customers may use their YRT transfer on TTC routes south of Steeles Avenue or the TTC subway using a PRESTO, credit or debit card payment on a PRESTO device (same applies for the reverse trip). If you are travelling on a TTC route crossing the Steeles Avenue boundary (listed above), please tap on and off the TTC bus; you will not be charged another fare within the two-hour transfer window. Visit the Connecting Services page for more details

Transfers

Transfers will be accepted on YRT from the following transit agencies as long as they have not expired.

  • Durham Region Transit
  • Brampton Transit
  • Mississauga Transit
  • Oakville Transit
  • Burlington Transit
  • Hamilton Street Railway
  • Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) - only when using a PRESTO, credit or debit card payment on a PRESTO device
  • TTC contracted routes in York Region (punched zone 3)

Transfers will NOT be refreshed. Customers must retain their original transfer and travel must be completed by the two-hour issuance time.

Brampton Transit

  • Valid Brampton Transit transfers will be accepted as proof of payment for travel on YRT services
  • When paying with PRESTO on board a Brampton 501 Zum bus, a Brampton Transit fare will be deducted, even if you are boarding in York Region
  • For travellers with Brampton Transit period passes (monthly or weekly passes) who started their trip in Brampton, YRT will honour your two-hour transfer; for your return trip when boarding in York Region (with a Brampton Transit period pass), a YRT fare must be paid

Durham Region Transit (DRT)

  • Valid DRT transfers are accepted everywhere on YRT
  • DRT fare payment using PRESTO card e-purse or DRT monthly pass will be accepted as long as the customer has tapped and paid a fare in Durham. A DRT monthly pass or e-purse fare payment on a PRESTO card will allow a customer to continue travelling and transferring again within York Region (as long as the transfer is within two hours of the original tap). Customers will be required to pay appropriate YRT fare on their return trip

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)
