Fare Media Policies

Tickets
  • Paper and mobile tickets are valid for travel on all YRT routes including TTC and Brampton Transit bus routes operating in York Region
  • All paper tickets (validated or unvalidated) must be shown to the operator and placed into the fare box. A transfer will be provided upon request. Customers using the PRESTO card or YRT Pay app are not provided paper transfers, as transfers are written on the card and mobile device
  • All mobile tickets (purchased through the YRT Pay app) must be activated before boarding the bus. Fare activation takes one full minute. When customers show their mobile ticket to the operator, they must also tap their ticket screen to show that the fare is valid

For travel on Viva

Paper tickets are valid for travel on Viva routes when properly validated (date and time-stamped) by a vivaNow ticket validator. VivaNow machines are located at all vivastations and terminals

  • If a oneRide ticket is purchased, it is already validated and ready for travel immediately (does not need to be validated in the vivaNow machine)
  • Validated tickets are valid for 120 minutes (two hours) from the date and time stamped on the individual ticket

Mobile tickets (purchased through the YRT Pay app) are valid for travel on Viva routes after they have been activated

  • Fare activation takes one full minute and must be completed before boarding the bus
  • Activated mobile tickets are valid for 120 minutes (two hours) from the date and time of activation

Customers on TTC-contracted bus routes are required to pay a TTC fare for trips crossing the Toronto-York boundary (Steeles Avenue). For example, when travelling on a TTC bus south of Steeles Avenue, you must pay TTC fare. When travelling on a TTC bus north of Steeles Avenue, you must pay YRT fare.

Monthly Passes

  • Are transferrable and may be used by anyone during the calendar month that it is valid

    • Monthly Passes activated on the Pay App are not transferrable between mobile devices

Customers on TTC-contracted bus routes are required to pay a TTC fare supplement for trips crossing the Toronto-York boundary (Steeles Avenue). • DRT transfers will be accepted everywhere on YRT
  • DRT monthly passes will be accepted only at the two transfer locations: Highway 404/Davis Drive Carpool Lot and Lake Ridge Road/Highway 48. YRT transfers will not be issued, so customers will be required to pay appropriate YRT fare on their return trip
