Why is there construction on Rutherford Road?
From late fall 2025 to fall 2026, Rutherford Road will only have one lane open in each direction between Creditstone Road/Melville Avenue and Greenock Drive so work can be done on the railway bridge. York Region is replacing and widening the bridge to align with the newly widened roadway and increase capacity. For more information on the project, visit york.ca/RutherfordRoad
How does the construction affect my bus?
Traffic may be slower than usual because there is only one lane open in each direction between Creditstone Road/Melville Avenue and Greenock Drive. While lanes are fully open on either side of the bridge, traffic will slow down as it passes through the section with reduced lanes. Buses are like any other vehicle and can get stuck in traffic which could cause your bus to be late.
When will the construction be done?
Work should be finished by fall 2026 but this date may change. For updates, please visit york.ca/RutherfordRoad
Why doesn’t YRT add more buses during construction?
YRT uses all available buses during rush hours. This can include adding extra buses to help routes that have significant delays. When YRT adds an additional bus to any route, that bus is placed into a high demand area to help improve service time for that location. However, once a bus has been inserted onto the route, it will have to deal with the same road conditions impacting the other buses.
Can YRT change bus schedules to accommodate the construction?
The impact that construction has on road conditions changes daily and can be challenging to predict. We are monitoring routes and making adjustments where we can but can’t create a schedule because road conditions can change so quickly.
Can YRT avoid the construction area?
No, YRT does not detour for construction so passengers who rely on transit in the affected areas can continue to make their trips.
How do I know if my stop is closed?
|
We try to keep stops open during construction. If a stop moves, we’ll post signs to show the new location. If a stop closes for safety reasons, we’ll post notices ahead of time with the new stop location and dates. For emergency closures, staff will be on-site to help. |
Can transfer times be extended because of delays due to construction?
Enforcement staff and bus drivers understand that construction causes delays on some routes, but PRESTO technology doesn’t let them extend transfer times. If you were charged twice because of a delay, please call us at 1-866-668-3978.
